Old Cabinets Or Dressers As Modern Bathroom Vanities
A highly functional contemporary bathroom furniture just like the vanity is becoming an essential bathroom must-have due to its ability to hold several fixtures which include the sink, mirror and drawers for storage. In these economic times however, having your own bathroom vanity can be considered as a luxury as this fixture can be quite expensive. But, if you're creative enough and you have an old cabinet or dresser just waiting for you at your attic, you have the option to make your own vanity for a lesser cost. Below are simple steps that you could follow to achieve a modern looking bath vanity made from your old cabinet or dresser.
Creating modern bathroom vanities from old dressers or cabinets, regardless if they are double sink or single sink vanities, requires few modifications. The materials you would be needing for this project includes a cabinet or dresser, saw, sink fixtures, pencil, plumbing fixtures, screws, sealant and paint, L-brackets, anchors, and drill. To get things started, measure the size of your cabinet in order to know the size and type of sink that you will use. If you want to save yourself from expenses, you could still use the sink that you are currently using in your bathroom. However, removing an old sink would only add extra work so it would be much better if you would just purchase a new one.
If you already have your sink, set it aside for a while because it will not be used during the initial stages of your project. Now focus on your cabinet and remove all its drawers, at the back of your furniture cut out a hole appropriate for the size of sink plumbing to fit in. As modern bathroom vanities are stand alone fixtures, make sure that you properly measure and mark the plumbing on your wall before you make a hole so that it would properly correspond to the cabinet or dresser once it is put in place. If you're done doing the holes, sand it off to achieve a smooth finish.
To mimic the pristine finish of modern bathroom vanities, there are two options to properly install your sink. First, if you are about to use a traditional sink that sits flat on top of a counter, trace the opening of the sink on the top of your cabinet, and then cut out the opening that you have traced with the use of a jigsaw. For the second option, if you're going to use a bowl type sink, make sure to read the instructions contained in the package of your sink that concerns the plumbing hole, and then follow these instructions when cutting the hole. If you're done cutting, test fit your sink, the drain fittings as well as the plumbing connections.
After fitting, remove the sink first and paint your cabinet or dresser in accordance to your bath space's color scheme or depending on your preferred color. If you have to make some modifications, attend to them all before you paint your cabinet and before you permanently install your sink. Once the paint is dry, you can now attach your contemporary bathroom furniture to the wall by using a drill, L-brackets and anchors to secure its position. Then, begin installing your sink.
In order to properly place your sink on the cabinet, flip your sink over and place a sealant around its inside lip. After which, carefully lower it down to the vanity and remove sealant residue. Finally, connect the water supply lines to the sink. You can now enjoy your homemade modern bath vanity.
Contemporary bathroom furniture, such as modern bathroom vanities, is very popular among homeowners and home designers. However, as vanities can be a bit expensive, many homeowners prefer making their own modern bath vanity from their old furnishings such as cabinets and dressers. Aside from saving money, a home made vanity also allows you to make room for your own design.
